As of today, Ukraine has a population of around 34–35 million people. These figures were shared today, October 5, by the director of the Institute of Demography and Social Studies of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Ella Libanova. This information was reported by Ukrinform.
“Depopulation in Ukraine began in 1991. This is not related to the collapse of the USSR and the formation of an independent Ukrainian state; it is merely a coincidence,” the demographer explained. “For two years, we sustained ourselves due to a significant influx of migrants from the former USSR, mainly from Central Asian republics, because the situation there was difficult. Once this reserve was exhausted, the population in Ukraine has been decreasing annually since 1994.”
Libanova emphasized that this issue is not only a problem for Ukraine but for the world as a whole. In the foreseeable future, this problem will also affect China.
The demographer clarified that the stated population figure for Ukraine is approximate, as there are no exact official data available.
“All European countries are losing their populations, but they compensate for this through migration. Moreover, they not only compensate quantitatively for the population. Young people come to them, who tend to have more children and experience lower mortality rates. This means they rejuvenate the age structure of the population,” Libanova noted.
