The energy holding DTEK has received its first shipment of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the United States after the vessel docked in Greece.

"The shipment, containing approximately 100 million cubic meters of gas or 1 TWh of energy aboard the Gaslog Savannah, arrived at the Revithoussa LNG terminal on Friday morning. D.Trading, the European trading subsidiary of DTEK, purchased the entire cargo. Working in collaboration with Greek and other partners, the LNG will be regasified and distributed through the gas networks of the European Union and Ukraine," – as reported on the DTEK website.

The energy holding notes that this delivery is part of broader efforts aimed at enhancing energy security in Ukraine and Europe by reducing dependence on Russian gas.

The delivery occurs just days before Ukraine halts the transit agreement for Russian gas to the European Union through its territory, emphasizes DTEK.

D.Trading anticipates that Friday's cargo will be the first in a series of such shipments from the U.S. and aims to expand its LNG operations into northern Europe and the Baltic region.

"The arrival of this LNG shipment sends a clear signal of DTEK's commitment to strengthening the energy security of Ukraine and Europe. Such cargoes not only provide the region with a flexible and secure energy source but also further diminish Russia's influence over our energy system. We are very grateful to the United States for the strategic contribution they are making to Europe's energy security through such deliveries," – noted DTEK CEO Maxim Timchenko:

D.Trading explained that it is transporting its first cargo via Greece due to restrictions on LNG transit through the Black Sea and directly into Ukraine, stemming from the war. Instead, the company will utilize regasification terminals like Revithoussa, along with cross-border pipelines, such as the "Vertical Corridor" initiative, through which gas is transported between Greece, Bulgaria, Romania, Hungary, Slovakia, Moldova, and Ukraine.

As reported in June 2024, American LNG producer Venture Global and D.Trading have reached an agreement for LNG deliveries to Ukraine and Eastern Europe.

"D.Trading will be procuring cargoes from the Venture Global Plaquemines LNG facility starting at the end of this year and continuing through the end of 2026 to support medium-term energy security needs in Ukraine and the broader Eastern European region," – Venture Global stated.

Additionally, the agreement stipulates that D.Trading will purchase up to 2 million tons of LNG annually from Venture Global's third facility – CP2 LNG – over 20 years. The arrangements also include collaboration on access to regasification terminal capacities and pipelines.
