Macron emphasized that the key issue remains Vladimir Putin's willingness for a "sincere, sustainable, and convincing" ceasefire. If the Kremlin agrees to such terms, it is the Ukrainians who should negotiate with Russia.
"The only question at this stage is whether President Putin is genuinely, sustainably, and convincingly ready to agree to a ceasefire on this basis. After that, Ukrainians should negotiate with Russia," noted Macron.
The French president also supported the position of Donald Trump's administration that the responsibility for Ukraine's security should rest with Europe. He explained this by the changing foreign policy priorities of the United States, which are increasingly focused on Asia rather than Europe.
Macron believes Trump has created a "window of opportunity" for negotiations, where each side has its role. In particular, the U.S. should restart the dialogue, while Zelensky will independently address issues of territories and Ukraine's sovereignty.
"The international community, especially Europe, must discuss security guarantees and the overall security architecture in the region. This is where we must take responsibility," stressed Macron.
Recall that on February 12, a phone conversation took place between the President of the United States and the President of Russia.
Donald Trump's call to Putin sparked a strong reaction in several countries around the world. Trump himself stated that Putin allegedly desires peace, but immediately warned that Ukraine should not count on joining NATO.
Subsequently, Donald Trump announced that a meeting of the U.S., Ukraine, and Russia regarding the end of the war would take place in Saudi Arabia.
