António Costa emphasized that support for Ukraine must continue "for as long as necessary" to ensure a just and lasting peace, as well as to uphold international law. According to him, this is essential for the freedom of the Ukrainian people and the security of Europe.

"Ukraine must remain our top priority. This year, we must continue to support Ukraine— for as long as necessary, for as long as it takes to achieve a comprehensive, just, and lasting peace. International law must prevail for the freedom of the Ukrainian people and our collective security," said Costa.

The President of the European Council called for strengthening the EU's defense capabilities. He announced that an informal meeting of European leaders would take place in early February with the participation of the NATO Secretary General and the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. Costa assigned a special role to Poland in the development of the EU's defense capabilities. In his view, investments in the defense sector will not only enhance security but also serve as an important economic factor, creating new jobs and promoting the development of European industry.

António Costa also highlighted the need for a comprehensive approach to security, which includes resilience to natural disasters, border protection, countering hybrid threats, strengthening energy infrastructure, ensuring food security, and reducing dependence on imported technologies and raw materials.

Furthermore, the President of the European Council pointed out the importance of energy independence to lower energy prices and ensure the competitiveness of the European economy. He announced that the European Commission would present a new "Clean Industrial Agreement" aimed at fostering economic development in the EU.

It’s worth noting that Poland began its presidency in the European Council on Wednesday, January 1. Foreign Minister Andrzej Szydło expressed his hopes regarding this.

Interestingly, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán was not invited to the celebrations marking Poland's presidency in the EU council.
