The average price of biomethane for export to Europe may be around EUR900 per thousand cubic meters, according to Georgiy Geletukha, chairman of the Bioenergy Association of Ukraine.
"I can share our expectations. Natural gas in Europe costs about EUR500 per thousand cubic meters. The average price of biomethane that we incorporate into our feasibility studies is approximately EUR900 per thousand cubic meters. So, it's almost twice as expensive," Geletukha said in a brief interview with "Energy Reform."
He noted that the price of the resource greatly depends on the raw materials and the sector in which it is sold.
"As Adomas (CEO of "MHP VERDANT" Adomas Audickas - ER) mentioned: the highest price for biomethane is for transportation. For electricity and heating, the prices are different: it's more expensive for electricity and cheaper for heating. And by the way, for transportation, biomethane needs to be liquefied. This is exactly what MHP does," the head of the BAU emphasized.
He also added that soon the volumes of biomethane injected into underground gas storage (UGS) could reach 2 million cubic meters. The injection of biomethane into UGS began for the first time in 2024, initially by the agricultural holding "Gals Agro," which has a plant in the Chernihiv region, and from October by the agricultural holding Vitagro with a plant in the Khmelnytskyi region (both with a capacity of 3 million cubic meters per year). In 2025, the MHP subsidiary "Orel-Leader" in the Dnipropetrovsk region (capacity of 11 million cubic meters per year) also started injecting biomethane into UGS. It also plans to produce liquefied gas for export.
At a press conference at the "Interfax-Ukraine" agency in early January, Geletukha reported that in 2024, the first million cubic meters of biomethane were injected into UGS, and its export is likely to take place in February 2025.
As reported, the Energy Customs on February 6, 2025, processed the periodic customs declaration for the transportation across the customs border of Ukraine of the first batch of biomethane for export to Europe via pipeline transport. They called it a historic event for the Ukrainian energy sector. Participants in the bioenergy market told "Energy Reform" that the first batch of biomethane was indeed carried out by the Vitagro holding. They have declined to comment for now, but Sergey Savchuk, the director of development and investments at the Vitagro group of companies, noted to "Energy Reform" at the end of January that the company might start exporting biomethane in a week or two.
In an interview with "Energy Reform," the head of the renewable energy department at "Gals Agro," Oleg Ryabov, also predicted, "that by the end of February, there will be the first transaction, perhaps in the second or third decade of the month." However, according to market participants, the company is still resolving certain technical issues.
