Trump may visit the Gaza Strip—what's his objective?

The newly elected U.S. President Donald Trump may visit the Gaza Strip following his inauguration. This visit could demonstrate his support for the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas.

This was stated by Trump's representative in the Middle East, Steve Witkoff, according to NBC News.

What is the goal of a possible Trump visit to the Gaza Strip

He emphasized how fragile, in the opinion of the newly elected president's team, the ceasefire agreement is. Witkoff also plans to maintain a near-constant presence in the region over the coming weeks and months to address flare-ups on the ground, which he believes could undermine the agreement.

"We need to stay informed, ready to extinguish any issues that arise," the official said.

At the same time, Witkoff is working towards achieving long-term stability for Israelis and the 2 million displaced Palestinians, a path that involves three phases of the already reached agreement.

The first phase will start today, last about six weeks, and involves the release of hostages held by Hamas and Palestinians detained by Israel.

The second phase will be coordinated during the first and is expected to lead to the release of additional hostages and the withdrawal of Israeli troops from Gaza. The goal of the final phase, which also requires further discussion, is to end the war and begin the reconstruction of Gaza.

Recall that recently, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken, in his farewell speech, stated that Hamas has managed to recruit nearly as many new fighters as Israel has killed during its offensive on Gaza.
