From January to October 2024, Ukraine exported 2,500 tons of chilled and frozen pork while importing 2,100 tons. The import figures are likely to decline to a record low, reported the industry association "Pork Producers of Ukraine" (ASU), citing data from the State Customs Service.
"Given the minimal presence of imported pork in the market (less than 1% of the total capacity), this year the meat industry is primarily focused on domestic production. At the same time, the low activity of external pork supplies 'suggests' that a new record low for import volumes may be set this year, surpassing the previous record of 5,200 tons established in 2018," analysts noted.
ASU highly commended the increase in pork supplies to external markets, which from January to October exceeded 2,500 tons and generated $6 million, exceeding the import costs of pork by $780,000.
Analysts predict that Ukraine may conclude 2024 with a net-exporter status, albeit with a slight margin.
As emphasized by ASU, more significant export achievements are hindered by the limited geography of foreign trade. For instance, 75% of Ukrainian pork is sent to the UAE, with the rest in small quantities to Bahrain, Malaysia, Liberia, Hong Kong, and Angola.
It was reported that the State Service for Food Safety and Consumer Protection is negotiating bilateral veterinary certificates necessary for establishing foreign trade with several countries, including South Korea, Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam, etc.
