As noted by the publication, Donald Trump secretly expanded the authority of the envoy beyond Middle Eastern issues several weeks ago. The U.S. President instructed Stephen Witkoff to "play a specific role" in the process of resolving the war in Ukraine.

"Trump secretly authorized Mr. Witkoff to broaden his portfolio beyond the Middle East in order to open a channel for negotiations with the Russians," the article states.

Additionally, the publication highlights that Trump has been friends with Witkoff since the 1980s, which is why he trusts him greatly. The U.S. President believes that Witkoff possesses negotiation skills that could help bring an end to the war in Ukraine.

According to The New York Times, Witkoff has already held direct talks with close associates of Putin before his visit to Moscow. Furthermore, he discussed Ukraine with representatives from Saudi Arabia and Qatar.

As a reminder, Bloomberg reported that U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is set to arrive in Ukraine. Initial negotiations regarding Ukrainian resources will take place during the visit.
